Solutions Limited Company Policy for Health
& Safety at Work
It is the Company policy that all possible
steps will be taken to ensure the health
and safety of persons and to prevent damage
to company property, in accordance with
the attached procedures (2 sheets).
It is the duty
of all employees to conform to Company
policy and safety codes of practice and
to accept and carry out their responsibilities.
All employees with
specific responsibilities for health and
safety must ensure that they are adequately
delegated in their absence.
All employees who
authorise work to be carried out at any
time, must ensure that there are adequate
health and safety facilities available.
The Factories Act
is to be complied with at all times, but
this in itself is not enough. All employees
should contribute towards making the work
areas as safe as possible. All work methods
should be periodically appraised to ensure
that the safest possible methods are adopted.
The Board of Directors
will give full backing to this policy
and will support all those who endeavour
to carry it out.
HEALTH
& SAFETY PART I
SAFETY CODE
Responsibilities
for Health & Safety within the Company
Directors
a)
Will ensure that there is an effective
policy for industrial health and safety
within the Company.
b)
Will periodically appraise the effectiveness
of the policy and ensure that any necessary
changes are made.
c)
Shall provide adequate staff, funds and
materials to meet the health and safety
requirements.
d)
Shall ensure that responsibility is properly
assigned and accepted at all levels.
e)
Shall ensure that the requirements embodied
in C.O.S.H.H. (Control of Substances Hazardous
to Health Regulations 1988) are carried
out:
1)
Assessment of risk.
2)
Provision, use and maintenance of adequate
control measures.
3)
Monitoring exposure of employees.
4) Health
surveillance of employees.
5)
Education and training of employees.
The Company
Secretary
a)
Should evaluate all risks in the Company
relating to accidents at work, health
risks at work, loss or damage to Company
property and risks to the public through
Company activity.
b)
Must ensure that all liability is covered
by insurance and advise the extent to
which risks are acceptable, whether insured
or not.
c)
Review insurance and loss record periodically
and advise when action is necessary to
correct adverse trends.
The Co-ordinator
a)
Shall carry out the Company safety and
health policy effectively, including the
requirements of COSHH.
b)
Shall review accident investigation reports
and satisfy himself that they come to
the correct conclusion and that corrective
action is taken.
c)
Shall ensure that the Factories Act is
conformed to.
d)
Shall review absences due to accident
or injury at work and notify reportable
occurrences.
e)
Shall ensure that the restriction on the
hours of work are complied with.
f)
Shall ensure that safety boots,
safety glass and other personal safety
equipment is issued to employees as required.
g)
Shall make sure that the Company safety
and health programme is understood at
all levels.
h)
Shall ensure that the safety organisation
and First Aid facilities are available
on all shifts.
i)
Shall occasionally check First Aid facilities
and records.
j)
Shall inspect new and unusual processes
for potential hazards in accordance with
C.O.S.H.H. requirements.
k)
Shall recommend any necessary safety rules.
l)
Shall attend the monthly committee
meeting.
The Maintenance
Engineer
a)
Must ensure that all work necessary to
ensure safety and good health is carried
out promptly.
b)
Shall ensure that abrasive wheels are
stored and handled correctly and only
fitted by appointed personnel
c)
Must ensure that any unsafe machine or
tool is adequately immobilised.

SOLUTIONS LTD SITE HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY
It is essential
that the Company plays its part in overall
site safety, making staff aware of the
need for conformance with safety rules.
In addition to
the general Company Policy for health
safety at work, detailed in Part 1, the
following rules should be adhered to by
all staff.
2.1
Report, upon arrival on site, to the Project
Managers/Site Agents etc. and familiarise
themselves with specific site Safety and
Health Regulations and identify the nearest:
a) Fire alarm
point. b) Fire extinguisher.
c) Fire exit to their place of work d)
First aid box.
e) Telephone.
2.2
Know the fire procedures for the site
or building and observe the rules applicable
to same.
2.3.1
Observe all site safety rules/instructions,
with special reference to the wearing
of personal safety equipment, e.g. hard
hats, safety glasses etc.
Without fail, follow
C.O.S.H.H. (Control of Substances Hazardous
to Health) procedures detailed on the
applicable assessment sheet.
2.4
Recognise to whom all accidents must be
reported.
2.5
Know to who all defects in plant and equipment
must be reported.
2.6
Keep all gangways, exits and work areas
clean and tidy at all times. Ensure that
fire exits and staircases are always kept
free from any materials and debris, especially
in occupied premises.

2.7
Maintain good housekeeping throughout
all areas of work. Never leave floors
wet; remember dangers exist to other site
personnel who do not understand the special
elements of partitioning installation.
Lift and clear waste regularly. Negotiate
good clean site conditions with the Main
Contactor or Client and then respect the
site and keep it clean.
2.8
When creating a hazard at any level, provide
adequate protection and signs for the
safety of others.
2.9
Always walk, never run on site and especially
on scaffolding.
2.10
Do not lift heavy items alone; get someone
to help and then always bend the legs
and lift with a straight back.
2.11.1
Report all accidents to the Site Survey
Officer/Supervisor and record in Site
Accident Record Book and submit details
to Head Office on the Norwood partition
Solution Accident Report.
2.11.2
Always wash cuts and have them dressed.
It is recommended that all site operatives
are injected against Tetanus.
2.11.3
In the event of a more serious accident,
immediate help should be summoned whilst
someone remains in attendance to the injured
operative. If the injured operative is
able to walk, he/she must be escorted
to the nearest First Aid unit to minimise
shock, fainting or severe loss of blood,
which could lead to a more serious injury.
As soon as possible,
the necessary details be recorded in the
Site Accident Book and similar details
submitted on the Norwood partition Solutions
Accident Report.
Do not overlook
obtaining witnesses and address.
2.12
Do not misuse macdehines and hand tools
and replace all worn and defective tool
equipment.
2.13
On special machines, note safety rules
and always use guards. Keep loose clothing
etc. away from moving machinery. Operatives
should not wear ties and rings when using
power tools and machines. It is inadvisable
to use power tools if alone on a site;
work only with hand tools and leave the
use of special machinery until others
are present.
2.14
Do not interfere with or adapt any equipment
or service without proper advice or permission.
2.15
Never nail objects to ladders or steps
and never remove guard or kick rails on
towers or scaffolding. Always use ladders
for access to and from such plant.
2.16
Observe site instructions on site mobile
plant; never ride open hoists.
2.17
Ensure all electrical equipment is properly
connected. A 110V supply should be used.
Where practicable, isolate all electrical
plant when not in use.
2.18
If lasers are to be used, all precautionary
measures advised by the Manufacturers
must be followed.
2.19
If hazardous materials are identified
during the course of a contract, this
should be reported immediately to the
site Health and Safety Officer and the
Installers own Company.
2.20
Annealed glass can be dangerous; always
use safety glasses and gloves and other
protection where appropriate. Never put
broken glass into sacks or bags. If it
cannot be seen it is even more dangerous
and more likely to cause an accident.
Put broken glass into boxes or bins and
break into small sections, i.e. no jagged
edges.

Solutions Limited Safety Rules for Sub-Contractors
3.1.0 INTRODUCTION
3.1.1
The statement of General Policy for Norwood
partition Solutions is given in Part 1
of this Health and Safety Policy and the
Site Policy in Part 2.
3.1.2
All references to 'sub-contractor' in
this document shall be deemed to include
other sub-contractors working for the
'sub-contractor'.
3.1.3
The sub-contractor's employees shall be
deemed to include all self-employed persons
working for that sub-contractor and its
sub-contractors.
3.2.0
POLICIES
3.2.1
Any sub-contractor (including labour masters)
who employs more than 5 people is bound
by LAW to have a written safety policy
(as required by section 2(3) of the Health
and Safety of Work Etc. Act 1974).
3.2.2
Where appropriate, therefore, each sub-contractor
shall submit to the Company the details
of his safety policy, his control procedures
for safety dealing with specific specialist
operations and associated hazards and
where relevant, the name and qualifications
of his Safety Adviser.
3.2.3
For individuals employed as sub-contractors
and for sub-contractors who employ 5 or
less people, the requirement of Part 3
- Duties of Employees and Self Employed
Persons of the Health and Safety Policy
shall apply.
3.2.4
It shall be the duty of individuals employed
as sub-contractors and for sub-contractors
who employ 5 or less people to describe,
to the Company, all aspects of a particular
undertaking or operation which may affect
the health and safety of others and all
proposed measures to be taken to eliminate
risks to others.
3.3.0
RESPONSIBILITIES
Each sub-contractor
shall:
3.3.1
Comply with the provisions of the Health
and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 and all
other Regulations and other statutory
requirements applicable to his works and
for the duration of those works.
3.3.2
Be responsible for the safety of the men
he employs or controls and for supervising
the detailed measures associated with
his specialist activities.
3.3.3
Where relevant, accept the Company's right
to manage the site or workplace and agree
to co-operate on health and safety matters
with other sub-contractors employed by
the Company and accept the need to obey
all rules made for the site or work-place.
N.B: Acceptance
of the Company's right to manage the site
of work-place shall not relieve a sub-contractor
of his own health and safety responsibilities.
3.3.4
Produce Method Statements for the performance
of the sub-contract works to clearly demonstrate
the planned avoidance of danger to other
persons on the site or work-place and
to members of the general public and ensure
that such statements are actively worked
to by the sub-contractor's workforce.
3.3.5
Irrespective of the number of his employees
on site or in the work-place, nominate
from that number a competent person to
liaise with the Company's management on
matters pertaining to health, safety and
welfare.
Each sub-contractor
shall:
3.4.1
Supply all the essential, mandatory and
site or work-place stipulated safety equipment
and protective clothing to his employees
and ensure its proper and consistent use.
3.4.2
Co-operate with all endeavours to ensure
that, until clearly defined by Statutory
Regulations, all employees under his control
will wear safety helmets in appropriate
circumstances.
3.4.3
Accept that, after the due warning from
the Company, failure to comply with the
aforementioned requirements may result
in the Company providing the necessary
equipment at the sub-contractor's expense,
or having sub-contract personnel removed
from the site or work-place, whichever
measure is appropriate and without further
explanation.
3.5.0 BEHAVIOUR
3.5.1
Each sub-contractor shall as a minimum
requirement, ensure that his employees
comply with Part 3 Duties of Employees
and Self-employed Persons of this Health
and Safety Policy.
3.5.2
In addition, each sub-contractor shall:
Co-operate with
the Company in creating a high standard
of industrial hygiene and environmental
conditions on sites or in work-places.
Avoid creating
fire hazards and prevent damage to plant,
materials and equipment on site.
Forbid the drinking
of alcohol during the working day.
Observe and comply
with all 'No Smoking' warnings and other
'Danger' or 'Warning' signs.
4.6.0
REPORTING
Each sub-contractor
shall:
4.6.1
Submit to the Group Company, copies of
any letters, Improvement or Prohibition
Notices or Summonses from the Health and
Safety Executive which relate to works
performed for the Company.
4.6.2
Submit to the Company, copies of reports
of accidents and dangerous occurrences
which relate to works performed for the
Company and reports of injuries and occupation
- related diseases sustained by its employees
(as defined by RIDDOR 1985).
4.6.3
Communicate all criticisms, warnings,
advise, etc., on health, safety and welfare
matters, as may arise from meetings, with
the Company or other controlling authorities,
to their personnel direct and immediately
and not rely upon the Company's management
to perform that duty for them.
