the brief
Having a strong reputation for developing innovative design-led partitioning solutions, Norwood was given the challenge of creating an acoustically sealed teaching pod areas within the iconic Round House grade II listed building at Derby Campus. The project was commissioned in consultation with Bowmer & Kirkland and Maber Architects.
Norwood’s approach
Environmental, functional and safety factors were considered in detail, together with aesthetic appeal at the design and planning stage. By incorporating integral services for power and data into the soundproof teaching areas, multimedia equipment could be fed directly from the walls. Using high density panelling with full height glazed screens sections to the front and rear, a vibrant college classroom environment was created. Maintenance considerations were included by provision of walk-on ceilings, facilitating support from above.
the client’s perspective
Norwood demonstrated its ability to introduce fully demountable and relocatable teaching pods into a grade II listed building, with the benefits of their obvious stunning visual and acoustic appeal. Whilst the solution emphasises the importance of using a design-led partition solution partner, the on-site manufacturing facilitates at Norwood allowed delivery of finished materials direct to site, thereby minimising on-site disruption. Furthermore, the incorporation of electrical and mechanical equipment within the partition design was a significant benefit to the overall project finish.
